Fire hits UNO-R

August 24, 2015 – Fire hits UNO-R Santa Monica Retreat House.  The Fire started  at around 8:30 PM at the High School Home Economics Laboratory within the compound of Santa Monica.  BFP Fire Chief declared fireout at around 9:30 PM.

The hour -long fire damaged the HE laboratory, the mess hall and part of the Language Center, Chapel and the Retreat Hall.  Fire chief Plotena said that the cause of the fire was faulty electrical wiring and the estimated damage would range within 400-500 thousand pesos.

Santa Monica was built in the late 60’s as a Free School for poor but deserving pupils of the nearby barangays.  In the mid-70’s, the pupils of the Free School were interated to the main school and Santa Monica was transformed into a Retreat House where students would use for their recollections and seminars.  In the late 90’s, part of the Retreat House were transformed into laboratory of the Hotel and Restaurant Management Department.  Recently, the university added the Language Center for the foreign students.
