Reflection Simbang Gabi (Dec 16, 2020) : THE MODERN PROPHETS

John 5:33-36

The fifth chapter of the Gospel of John starts with Jesus healing a man, sick for thirty-eight years, on a Sabbath day. Seeing the indignation of the Pharisees towards Him, Jesus said, “My Father is always working, and I too must work.” For the Jewish authorities, Jesus did not only break the law on the Sabbath day but He also made Himself equal to God. The story then turns to the issue of the testimony to Jesus, which is the Gospel for today.

We can learn three things from the Gospel:

John the Baptist, who came before Jesus, is esteemed by the people as righteous and holy man. In the preceding chapters of the Gospel of John, John the Baptist professed that he is not the Messiah. He knew his role in the salvation history and he testified to the Truth who is Jesus Christ Himself. Like John, we are called to be prophets who would testify to the Truth especially now that He will come to us.

In the Gospel, Jesus calls John as a “burning and shining lamp” whom people, for a time, rejoiced in his light. This is because John the Baptist shone with the light derived from God Himself. He did not glorify Himself, rather he reflected God’s light. This lamp shone continuously since its oil is the grace of the Holy Spirit. In today’s world, we have heard a lot of people who claim to be prophets yet, they do not lead the people to God but only to themselves and that what makes them FALSE PROPHETS. TRUE PROPHETS do not glorify themselves but always reflect the light of the True God. Be a reflector of the light of God that gives faith, hope, and love in this trying times.

Jesus, the Word of God, is the message and the messenger of the Father. Jesus performs the works the Father sent Him to do. He is not only the messenger of God; He is God Himself who was made flesh to redeem mankind from their sins. Today as we begin the traditional Misa de Gallo we must remember that God is the reason of our celebration. This advent we joyfully wait for the coming of our Savior, the true reason for CHRISTmas.

As Christians what must we do then? Like John the Baptist, we must always bear witness to the Truth. We must always proclaim the Divinity of Christ and His Message of Love freely given to all mankind. Now, if we have an experience of something good it is hard to keep it to ourselves. The same goes to our experience of God. Like that of John the Baptist, we must also be a light to other people to bring them to Christ. We can do this by being examples of holiness as manifested in our good works. We must translate our testimony of truth into works. It is not enough to know and speak of the Truth; we must in every way try to be like Jesus.

El quinto capítulo del Evangelio de Juan comienza con Jesús sanando a un hombre, enfermo por treinta y ocho años, en un día de reposo. Viendo la indignación de los fariseos hacia él, Jesús dijo: “Mi Padre siempre está trabajando, y yo también debo trabajar”. Para las autoridades judías, Jesús no sólo rompió la ley del día de reposo, sino que también se hizo igual a Dios. La historia se dirige entonces al tema del testimonio a Jesús, que es el Evangelio de hoy.

Podemos aprender tres cosas del Evangelio:

Primera: Juan el Bautista, que vino antes de Jesús, es estimado por el pueblo como hombre justo y santo. En los capítulos anteriores del Evangelio de Juan, Juan el Bautista profesó que él no es el Mesías. Él conocía su papel en la historia de la salvación y testificó ante la verdad que es Jesucristo mismo. Como Juan, estamos llamados a ser PROFETAS que testificarían la verdad, especialmente ahora que él vendrá a nosotros.

Segunda: en el Evangelio, Jesús llama a Juan como una “lámpara ardiente y brillante” a quien la gente, por un tiempo, se regocijó en su luz. Esto es porque Juan el Bautista brilló con la luz derivada de Dios mismo. No se glorificaba a sí mismo, sino que reflejaba la luz de Dios. Esta lámpara brilló continuamente, ya que su aceite es la gracia del Espíritu Santo. En el mundo de hoy hemos escuchado a muchas personas que pretenden ser profetas, pero no conducen el pueblo a Dios, sino solo a sí mismos, y eso lo que los hace FALSOS PROFETAS. LOS VERDADEROS PROFETAS no se glorifican a sí mismos, sino que siempre reflejan la luz del Dios Verdadero. SEA UN REFLECTOR DE LA LUZ DEL DIOS que da fe, esperanza y amor en estos tiempos difíciles.

Tercera: Jesús, la Palabra de Dios, es el mensaje y el mensajero del Padre. Jesús realiza las obras que el Padre le mandó a hacer. Él no es sólo el mensajero de Dios; él es Dios mismo quien fue hecho carne para redimir a la humanidad de sus pecados. Hoy, al comenzar la tradicional Misa de Gallo, debemos recordar que Dios es la razón de nuestra celebración. Este tiempo de adviento esperamos con alegría la venida de nuestro SALVADOR, LA VERDADERA RAZÓN DE LA NAVIDAD.

Como cristianos, ¿qué debemos hacer entonces? Como Juan el Bautista, debemos dar siempre testimonio de la verdad. Debemos proclamar siempre la Divinidad de Cristo y su mensaje de Amor, libremente dado a toda la humanidad. Ahora, si tenemos una experiencia de algo bueno es difícil de mantenerla para nosotros mismos. Lo mismo ocurre con nuestra experiencia de Dios. Igual el Juan Bautista, también debemos ser una luz a otras personas para llevarlas a Cristo. Podemos hacer esto siendo ejemplos de santidad y manifestando la luz de Dios a través de nuestras buenas obras. Debemos traducir de verdad nuestro testimonio en obras. No es suficiente saber y hablar de la verdad; debemos en toda manera tratar de ser como Jesús.
