On the auspicious occasion of the installation of the relic of Blessed Jose Rada in San Fernando El Rey Parish, Liloan, Cebu, we find ourselves immersed in a profound celebration that resonates with the rich history of our Province of St. Ezekiel Moreno. As we commemorate the 25th anniversary of its foundation, we are filled with gratitude for the faithful individuals who have accompanied us on our missionary journey to the parishes we once administered and established on Cebu Island.

The presence of the Order of Augustinian Recollects in the Philippines since 1606 has left an indelible mark on the fabric of our communities. Among the OAR saints who graced this island with their presence, the Martyrs of Motril from Granada, Spain, including the revered St. Ezekiel Moreno, have illuminated our path with their enduring legacy.

On July 16, 2024, as the sun began its descent in the sky, the procession for the installation of the relic of Blessed Jose Rada commenced around 4 pm, enveloping the surroundings in a reverent atmosphere. Led by Fr. Invenzor Melgazo, OAR, and Fr. Albert Pellazar, OAR, the faithful embarked on a solemn journey that would etch itself into the annals of their spiritual history.

Following the procession, a poignant Eucharistic celebration unfolded, presided over by the esteemed Msgr. Roberto “Boy’ Fernandez Alesna. The momentous occasion reached its pinnacle when the relics of Blessed Jose Rada were ceremoniously received by Fr. Edgar Sundo, the dedicated pastor of San Fernando El Rey Parish. Amidst hushed whispers and bowed heads, Fr. Albert solemnly read the inscription that authenticated the relic as a primary relic, taken from the sacred bones of the martyrs.

Blessed Jose Rada, one of the martyrs of Motril, was assigned to Liloan, Cebu, for a brief yet impactful period of five months, during which he immersed himself in learning the Cebuano dialect. His dedication to understanding and engaging with the local community exemplifies the spirit of missionary zeal that has defined the OAR presence in Cebu.

The hearts of the attendees swelled with joy and gratitude as they realized that the cherished relic would now find its home within the confines of their parish. Post-mass, a line formed as individuals eagerly sought to pay homage to the relic, their faces illuminated with reverence and awe.

Following the Eucharistic celebration, Professor Luigi Romanillos also gave a talk on the “Lives of the Martyrs of Motril” to further enrich the knowledge and deepen the spiritual understanding of the gathered faithful. His insightful discourse shed light on the profound sacrifices and unwavering faith of the martyrs, offering a glimpse into their inspirational journey of martyrdom and devotion. The attendees were blessed to receive such enlightening teachings that connected them even more closely to the legacy of Blessed Jose Rada and the martyrs of Motril.

Truly, it was an awe-inspiring experience that resonated with the vibrant faith of the devoted parishioners. The palpable sense of devotion and unity that permeated the air was a testament to the enduring impact of Blessed Jose Rada and the martyrs of Motril.

May the presence of Blessed Jose Rada’s relic serve as a catalyst for miracles and blessings within the community, igniting a fervent devotion that could potentially elevate the martyrs of Motril to the revered status of sainthood. Let us continue to nurture our faith, guided by the light of these holy relics, as we strive to emulate the virtues and sacrifices of the saints who have gone before us.

Blessings to all who have been part of this memorable event, and may the spirit of Blessed Jose Rada continue to inspire us on our spiritual path.
