Gospel Bullet Points (John 14:23-29)
- In His parting discourse at the Last Supper, Jesus provides us with comforting words: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you.”
- The peace that Christ left his disciples was much deeper than the peace of mind; the peace and quiet resulting from the absence of conflict or from any sort of security or material prosperity. It’s not the kind of peace that one experiences when one visits a cemetery. It is that peace that comes from knowing that we are always loved by God. It is the peace that comes from knowing that the hand of God is constantly on our shoulders, helping us, guiding us, and supporting us whenever we feel the need to call upon Him. So, in trying times, in times of uncertainties and turmoil, remember the great inheritance Christ left us through these powerful words, Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.
- If our peace were based on anything else, it would be unstable, because all the earthly things and circumstances are vulnerable to change. The peace that comes from Jesus is impervious because it’s based on his love and mercy, and those are everlasting. Let us take great comfort in these words for they are God’s assurance that we are wrapped in his constant love and peace. “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
