Gospel Bullet Points (Luke 10:1-12; 17-20)
- Jesus sends out seventy-two men to make known in advance his coming: “Go on your way.” The basic meaning of his instruction is that they are to depend on nothing nor anybody, but on Him. They are to fulfill their mission without possessing anything except trust in the Sender.
- He tells the 72 that following Him now means trusting the mysterious and unknown so that God alone will be their source of strength and security. No money bag…do not place importance on acquiring material things. No sack….do not worry about provisions. No sandals…. strengthen your feet because the journey will be rough. Greet no one along the way…. stay focused on the destination, and do not let yourself become distracted by other ambitions or aspirations.
- We may not be able to live this passage literally today, but we can adapt the ‘spirit’ of the instruction. Like the apostles and the 72, we are sent. Don’t worry about how we will accomplish it. The words and the ways will come to us because it will be the Spirit of God moving through us.
