Gospel Bullet Points (Matthew 16:13-20)

  • Jesus asked the apostles straight to the point: “Who do you say that I am?” Only Peter dared to say: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” His response was clear and sure. Peter had listened to Jesus gave the Sermon on the Mount, had seen Christ cure the afflicted. Jesus allowed him to see a glimpse of His glory during the transfiguration. Jesus taught Peter to love one’s enemies and how to pray. Peter knew he was in the presence of the anointed One, the Christ, God the Son. No doubt Peter loved Jesus.
  • By his answer, Peter made a personal commitment to Christ. And Jesus said: “Blessed are you Peter,” calling him the rock of faith. Christ appointed Peter the head of our Church, giving him the keys to the kingdom.
  • Just as Jesus asked his disciples regarding his identity more than 2,000 years ago, today the question “Who do you say that I am?” is posed to us too. Each of us must have an immediate answer to this question. And it is an answer we must give the Lord today. However, in doing so, let us be aware that we cannot fool God with superficial or even false answers. God knows us as we are.
