Anniversary of the Inauguration of San Sebastian Basilica
MANILA–Happy birthday, San Sebastian Basilica!
On this day in 1891, the fifth and current version of San Sebastian opened its doors after ten years since the previous church was affected by the devastating 1880 earthquake. “The construction of the new temple is over. It is a monumental edifice that rivals with the most sumptuous ones of Europe,” said an article in the newspaper El Comercio, as quoted by Emanuel Luis Romanillos in The Spires of San Sebastian.
“Its very high steeples are visible everywhere,” quoted Romanillos from the newspaper, about the Neo-Gothic features, “’as they surpass the highest towers of Manila.’”

Maligayang kaarawan, San Sebastian Basilica!
Sa araw na ito noong 1891, idinaos ang pagbubukas ng kasalukuyang bersyon ng San Sebastian Basilica sampung taon makalipas ang pagkasira ng nakaraang bersyon dahil sa malakas na lindol noong 1880. “The construction of the new temple is over,” sabi ng isang artikulo sa diyaryong El Comercio na nabanggit ni Emmanuel Luis Romanillos sa librong The Spires of San Sebastian. “It is a monumental edifice that rivals with the most sumptuous ones of Europe.”
“’Its very high steeples are visible everywhere’,” ulat ni Romanillos mula sa El Comercio, tungkol sa natatanging Neo-Gothic na katangian ng simbahan, “’as they surpass the highest towers of Manila.’”
