ARRIVAL OF THE CHRISTIANITY IN TAIWAN

1926      

Spanish station for Japan-bound galleon trade was built in northern Taiwan with the fort named Santisima Trinidad. Start of Christianization and the establishment of a city named San Salvador. A church was built and administered by. Fr. Francisco Mola, OP.

1629      

Second settlement in northwestern coast was established.

1642      

Dutch-Spanish war which signaled the end of the first attempt of “gospelization”.

1803      

As fruit of the underground flourishing of Catholicism in Mainland China, the first China Synod held inChong-qing (Si Chuan) was held.

1844      

French Treaty of Whampao secured the toleration of Roman Catholicism and Protestantism.

May 18, 1859    

Two Dominican priest brought some Catholic lay persons from Xiamen to Kaohsiung. Revival of Catholicism in Taiwan so that by 1961 a big church was built in Wan-ching, in Pingtung country.

1883      

Taiwan became officially part of the apostolic Vicariate of Xiamen (a.k.a. Amoy).

July 19, 1913     

Establishment of the Apostolic Prefecture of Taiwan, as separated from Continental China.

1950      

Division of Taiwan into 3 Apostolic Prefectures: Taipei, Kaohsiung and Taichung. (Taipei became an Archdiocese in 1952).

March 21, 1961

Pope John XXIII established the Diocese of Kaohsiung with Most. Rev Cheng Tian-Hsiang, OP,DD (Joseph Cheng), as first bishop.

THE RECOLLECTS IN TAIWAN

June 1963           

Arrival of the first Recollects in Taiwan: Frs. Melecio Ho and Felipe Liu. Later, Frs. Manuel Pierola and Antonio Lasheras joined them.

May 1964            

Kaohsiung bishop entrusted to the Recollects the districts of Chung-Hsing in Taliao and Linyuan.

May 15, 1965    

Inauguration of a parochial complex built in December 1964.

July 22, 1965     

Arrival of two more religious-Frs. Pedro Tung and Benito Suen.

1966      

A Kindergarten was opened.

1977      

Fr. Cipriano Zubiri also came.

ARRIVAL OF FILIPINO RECOLLECTS

1990      

Construction of their central house in taliao. Arrival of the Filipino Recollects in Taiwan: Frs. Sotero Macabudbud and Arsenio Escabusa.

1990      

Fr. Celestino Cachapero came next and stayed until 1995.

1995      

Frs. Rouel Sia and Antonio Limchaypo followed. The former stayed until mid-2000; the latter until 1996.

1996      

Diaconal exposure of classmate of Rev. Anthony Morillo and Corvin Maturan. Few months after, they left Taiwan for their presbyteral ordination in the Philippines.

November 10, 1997        

Arrival of Fr. Anthony Morillo, Corvin Maturan and Joel Villaruel in Taiwan.

November 28, 1998        

Mission stations in Linyuan and Santimen were given to the newly-erected Province of St. Ezekiel Moreno. The St. Augustine Parish convent serves as the central house for the Province. [cf.House Directory at Appendix VIII, p. 243.]

2000      

Fr. Villaruel returned to the Philippines. Fr. Cachapero went back to Taiwan where, on 4 October 2003, he died.

2002      

Fr. Jerome Virtudazo received his patente (dated 19 August) For Taiwan missions. Fr. Morillo returned to the Philippines in October.

2003      

Arrival of Frs. Jerome Virtudazo and Joel Dequilla. The form,er went back to the Philippines in 2006.

2007      

Fr. Virgilio Paredes arrived in Taiwan.
