Five faculty members of the USJ-R School of Education (SED) bagged multiple awards in the recently concluded CHED ASEAN competition for best teaching models in the context of the pandemic.

The theme of the competition organized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) was “Call for Teaching Models in Philippine Schools at the Time of COVID-19 and Beyond: A Competition for Excellence and Resiliency in Education.

Chairperson Ionell Jay Terogo of the University’s Department of Teacher Education (DOTE) was named as champion in the Best Teaching Model Implementer – Synchronous Approach.

DOTE Instructor Rhonnette Abatayo won as champion in the Best Teaching Model Implementer – Asynchronous Approach category.

Rex Villavelez of DOTE also won First-Runner Up in the Best Innovative Instructional Design Concept through the use of the Internet.

Physical Education faculty members Benedict Candia and Wyndell Casquejo also joined. They won as runners-up in the Best Innovative Instructional Design Concept (without the use of the Internet) and Best Teaching Model Implementer (Asynchronous Approach), respectively.

The instructors won by providing (1) original and replicable teaching models, (2) comprehensive and appropriate learning plans, and (3) well-prepared teaching demonstrations which are seen to be flexible and manageable in the new normal for education.

The competition focused on flexible learning models that can be utilized in the “new normal”. These resilient education approaches are aimed to provide a picture of the future prospects to distance learning.

The final phase of the competition was virtually held on August 25. The official results will be officially announced by CHED on September 3.

SED Dean Dr. Jestoni Babia was tapped as judge in some of the categories along with other well-known education administrators in the region.

The event was well-attended by higher education institutions in Region VII. CHED Regional Director Dr. Maximo Ajibe graced the event and congratulated the winners and participants.

This competition is CHED’s commemoration of the annual ASEAN Month, which is held every August. The celebration this year is based from ASEAN-Vietnam’s “Cohesive and Responsive ASEAN” efforts especially with the initiative of finding a platform for higher education stakeholders to highlight a unified regional bloc to address the challenges of the pandemic.

All videos, learning plans, and submissions are to be uploaded in CHED’s online open resources portal (phlconnect.ched.gov.ph) to be used as exemplar models of teaching in resilience education.
