Fr. Leo G. Alaras, OAR Honored at Cantata Macau: 7th Macau International Choir Festival and Competition
Macau hosted a grand celebration of choral artistry during the 7th Macau International Choir Festival and Competition (Cantata Macau) from November 29 to December 1, 2024. Among the many highlights of the event was the Award and Recognition given to Fr. Leo G. Alaras, OAR, as the arranger of the festival’s official theme song, Music Is Life, originally composed by Mr. Kier Franco. Sharing the spotlight with him was Mr. Emil Cruz (UNO-R Coro Recoleto Conductor), who was recognized as the official conductor of the festival.
Fr. Alaras, OAR, the Vice President for Identity, Formation, and Mission of the University of Negros Occidental- Recoletos (UNO-R), was lauded not only for his musical composition and arrangement but also for his outstanding contribution to choral music, as demonstrated through his inspiring performances during the three-day event. He collaborated with various international choirs, showcasing his versatility as an artist and a cultural ambassador.
The festival’s theme song, Music Is Life, echoed the festival’s goal of uniting cultures and individuals through the universal language of music. Fr. Alaras masterfully arranged the piece, imbuing it with a deep sense of hope and harmony, resonating with the festival’s global audience.
Mr. Emil Cruz, the official conductor of the festival, further amplified the impact of Fr. Alaras’ work. His dynamic leadership and precise execution brought Music Is Life to life during the opening and closing ceremonies, setting the tone for the festival’s spirit of unity and collaboration.

The Philippine delegation dominated the competition as the Cantata Manila Ensemble was declared the Grand Prix Champion.
