BRAZIL–Another Augustinian Recollect was named by Pope Francis as Bishop of the Prelature of Alto Xingu-Tucumã, in the Amazon. A missionary in Brazil from 1999 to the present, Fray Jesús María López Mauleón, OAR, will shepherd the People of God in the newly created prelature in the Amazon Region. The Holy See has made the appointment public on Wednesday, November 6, in its daily press release.
López Mauleón becomes the twenty-first Augustinian Recollect Bishop in the world. His appointment is the second this week, after the appointment this Tuesday of Fray Darío Rubén Quintana. The Spanish religious, born in Navarra, Spain, is now Episcopal Vicar of the Archdiocese of Fortaleza (Brazil) in the region of Nossa Senhora da Assunção and Parish Priest of the Parish of São Pedro, in Fortaleza.
Fray Jesús María López Mauleón was born in Mues (Navarra) on March 5, 1955. He entered the seminary of the Augustinian Recollects in Fuenterrabia (Guipúzcoa) in 1971. In 1975 he began his novitiate formation in Monteguado (Navarra). He made the Solemn Profession of Vows as Augustinian Recollect on October 18, 1980. He received priestly ordination on July 18, 1981 in Marcilla (Navarra) from the Augustinian Recollect Bishop of Marajó (Brazil), Bishop Alquilio Álvarez.
After being ordained, he carried out his pastoral work in Spain, as he was assigned in different communities such as Chiclana de la Frontera (Cádiz), Madrid, Zaragoza, Santa María de Águila (Almería) and Lodosa (Navarra). In 1999 he was appointed to establish, along with another religious, the new presence of the Augustinian Recollects in the Diocese of Tianguá, in Ceará (Brazil).
From then until today, he has worked as a missionary in Brazil. He has been assigned in Guaraciaba, Franca, the Prelature of Labrea and Fortaleza. Since 2015 he was the Episcopal Vicar of the Archdiocese of Fortaleza in the Nossa Senhora da Assunção region, as well as pastor of the parish of São Pedro, in Barra do Ceará (Fortaleza).
The Prior General of the Order of Augustinian Recollects, Fray Miguel Miró, OAR, has received with joy the appointment of Fray Jesús María López Mauleón, especially because “he can contribute his knowledge and experience of fraternal life.” Fray Miró wishes the new bishop to find two models of pastors in Pope Francis and St. Augustine “who journey with the people.”
